Funny open source maintainer shirts and gifts

For the person with 140 open pull requests and a day job. Every line here is in their notifications.

01 The lines

What they say at work.

Every piece is made to order. The images are mockups, and each one is labeled.

AWAITING REVIEW. hoodie, $79
The status of most of the queue. Pigment-dyed fleece for the wait.
MERGE CONFLICT. mug, $30
Two contributors fixed the same bug on the same day. Neither of them is sorry.
PLEASE REBASE. tee, $44
The most common comment in the project. Usually the only one needed.
APPROVED WITH NITS. tee, $44
Merging it anyway, because the contributor has been waiting long enough.

02 The job

Why these lines.

Maintaining an open source project means reviewing work from strangers, for free, around everything else. The pull request queue fills faster than anyone can read it, and most of it is waiting on something: a review, a rebase, a contributor who went quiet after the first round of comments.

The jokes are about volume. A first-time contributor's typo fix, with a merge conflict in the lockfile. The pull request that has been awaiting review long enough to need its own changelog entry. The approval with nits that the contributor fixes in a second pull request, which also needs review.

These pieces carry the statuses a maintainer sets most. They're a fair gift for anyone who has ever closed an issue as a duplicate.

The words, in plain English: Awaiting review, Merge conflict, Rebase / please rebase, Nit / approved with nits.

03 As a gift

Buying one for them.

Buying for a maintainer? The hoodie is the one they'll wear to every conference talk about burnout. If you don't know their size, the mug or the sticker sheet work for anyone: the stickers go straight onto the laptop they triage issues on. Contributors sometimes chip in on a gift for a maintainer who reviewed their first pull request. Each piece ships from Fourthwall after it's printed, so order a week or two early.

More by budget in the gift guide for programmers, and sizes, shipping and returns on the help page.

04 Someone else

Other jobs, other lines.

Buying for a whole team? Pick one line, any mix of sizes, no minimum. Team shirts.
